Bassist-composer-bandleader-pianist Charles Mingus was a man of many moods and emotions, and his wide-ranging music reflected his personality. His earliest influences included his mother's Holiness church and Duke Ellington. In the mid-1940s, the modern jazz of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie entered Mingus's musical sphere. If that wasn't enough, in the 1950s, Mingus's early Western classical music studies surfaced in a series of Third Stream recordings, and in 1960, he embraced the then-burgeoning Avant Garde movement.
